AW23 SENSORY FREEDOM
There have been several significant pro-democracy movements in modern Chinese history, the most notable being the Tiananmen Square Incident and the Cultural Revolution. The former sought to promote democracy and freedom, while the latter aimed to suppress these very ideals. Throughout China's history, as well as in the broader context of global discourse, the concept of freedom has been a subject of extensive discussion. In this project, I plan to examine these two pivotal civil movements and explore what freedom meant to the people during these crucial periods.
I explored the significant events and iconic imagery of two distinct periods, examining how various artists and photographers expressed their perspectives through unique artistic techniques. Many of these creators employed unconventional, exaggerated forms in their works—utilizing exaggerated movements, contrasting colors in film, abstract language, and striking tones—to convey deeper metaphorical concepts. Their way of pursuing freedom is conservative and passionate, with a certain charms deep inside.
